TREASURY REPORT

COMMITTEE REPORTS

PRIMITIVE:

Gary Greene said he mowed the first half of the primitive range and now would need someone to bale the cuttings.

SHOTGUN:

Mike Beaty said next weekend Ashley was going to have a black powder muzzle loading and cartridge trap and sporting clays competition.

RANGE:

Nothing to report.

KITCHEN:

Scott Langworthy wanted to thank everyone who worked in the kitchen during the State Shoot. All the volunteers really busted their backs helping out in the kitchen.

The following is being included in this news letter again---Don’t forget we still have the Fall Shoot.

NOTE!--- The kitchen has plenty of mustard and hot sauce, those items no longer need to be donated.

A list of items was suggested to ask for as a donation to the kitchen. Remember a reduction in kitchen expenses lowers the costs in providing meals and increases the profits generated for the club. Please supply the items as requested i.e. 12 oz cans of pop fit compactly into the pop refrigerator, “Dixie” plates are not as flimsy as paper or Styrofoam.

Pop-12 oz cans of: Coke Diet Coke caffeine free Diet Coke Pepsi Diet Pepsi caffeine free Diet Pepsi caffeine free Pepsi Mountain Dew 7-Up Diet 7-Up Root Beer

Bottled water-16.9oz bottles Lite tuna packed in water Ketchup Miracle Whip Hot Fudge Chef-Mate Chili Sauce (from Gordon’s) Plastic Silverware 9” “Dixie” plates 6” “Dixie” plates Styrofoam bowls for ice cream Paper napkins Toilet paper

If there are any questions or if you can provide any of the items please contact Janet Langworthy. Janet is keeping a list to prevent duplicate items being donated. Janet’s phone number is (517) 394-0140.

GROUNDS:

Larry Cummins thanked everyone who worked the grounds and helped assemble and put in the stringers. Larry is also trying to figure out the most economical way to make “lay” down stringers if the N-SSA decides to come back.

It was pointed out during the state shoot that vinyl “J” channel might be a better way to hold target backers than the wood ones in current use. The vinyl can take more stray shots than the wood.

It has been asked to be put in the newsletter that every weekend chainsaws, mowers and weed whips need to be brought out to the club grounds and used!!

OLD BUSINESS:

Don’t forget there is going to a merchandise shoot during the fall shoot and the club is still accepting donations for this event. The revival of this event seemed to generate a lot of interest during the State Shoot!!

Larry Cummins said that even though the shingles and other roofing material have been purchased and are on site there seems to be no progress on getting the new roof on. Larry said due to the club members’ age and health issues maybe the roof installation should be contracted out. Larry said he would try to get some quotes on installation.

JB wants to keep the future rifle raffle on club members’ minds. This could generate a lot of funds for the club.

NEW BUSINESS

Scott Langworthy said about a week and a half before the State shoot the Building Inspector got a complaint that building was going on without a permit. The Inspector came out and looked the grounds over and found nothing out of order. The complainant could have been a club member or a neighbor.

Don Tilton said the club received a flyer about the Pine River Squirrel shoot and rendezvous September 5-7, the weekend after our Fall Shoot. Club members have shot there and have had a good time.

The Board of Directors had a board meeting June 28. Monies were not approved to fund monthly shoots due to current economic conditions. The Board did approve of trailers being left at the club all summer if the trailer owners are at the club working.

Fred Curtis has come up with a new design for a medal.

Larry Peterson said the clubs’ web site is still getting good hits. Also Larry has more shoot flyers available for the fall shoot if any members would like to pass them out. Larry also said Nick Dittameros from the MSU newspaper would like to come out for our fall shoot.

Mike Beaty said in response to deer TB an early antlerless deer season will take place Sept.18 thru Sept. 22 on private land

in Zone 3.

SHOW AND TELL

Bruce Robb said he is still trying to shame others into bringing items for show and tell.

Chuck Langworthy brought a .45 caliber rifle he has been building. The rifle has a wild cherry stock that Chuck said is very difficult to work. Chuck said he was very lucky when he drilled the ramrod hole and was able to drill it true. The stock has 3/8” cast off.

John Dyer had a belt pouch he made for Stu Besonen. The leather pouch was trimmed in pigskin and dyed chambray leather. The flap is held closed with an antler button

The 50/50 raffle was won by Mike Young. $25.00 was donated back to the club.

CONSTITUTION:

Ballots for bylaw changes were mailed out July 21. Will all members please return your ballots as soon as possible after receiving them? The ballots will be tallied at the August 10 meeting.

Don’t Forget

The 2nd (hopefully) annual Squirrel Hunting/ Fishing Trip.

September 21 through 27—come for any or all of the days. Hunting will be for squirrel, woodcock and grouse. Fishing will be for bluegill and bass.

Camping will be on state land northeast of Grayling. Maps will be available at next months meeting. Any questions contact Mike Beaty.

The Next Club Meeting Will Be At the Range July 20 at 1pm

-----Shotgun shoot before the meeting, 9:00 at the shotgun range----

The Meeting has been moved from the 13th because of the schedule conflict
with the State Shoot

TREASURY REPORT

COMMITTEE REPORTS

PRIMITIVE:
Stu Besonen said there was a light turnout at the primitive range for the Spring Shoot.

SHOTGUN:
Mike Valley said approximately $500.00 was made during the Spring Shoot. Mike also said the Shotgun committee needs to come up with a better plan for prizes.
Mike Beatty invited the “visually impaired” to come out to the weekly shoots.
Mike Valley said the first place aggregate prize for the Fall Shoot will be a shotgun.

RANGE:
Nothing to report.

KITCHEN:
Scott Langworthy thanked every one for the help during the Spring Shoot and for all the donations to the kitchen. The donated food and kitchen supplies really cut costs of operating the kitchen.
The following is being included in this news letter again---Don’t forget we still have the State Shoot and the Fall Shoot.
Bottled water-16.9oz bottles Lite tuna packed in water Ketchup Mustard Miracle Whip Hot Fudge Chef-Mate Chili Hot Sauce (from Gordon’s) Plastic Silverware 9” “Dixie” plates 6” “Dixie” plates Styrofoam bowls for ice cream Paper napkins Toilet paper
If there are any questions or if you can provide any of the items please contact Janet Langworthy. Janet is keeping a list to prevent duplicate items being donated. Janet’s phone number is (517) 394-0140.

GROUNDS:
Larry Cummins said Gary Greene had asked if it was okay to start working on the 100 yard range. Larry also asked J.B. how he would like the stringers and celotex set up for the Fall Merchandise shoot.
Mike Beatty said there are dead and dying ash trees that need to be removed and that this would be a good supply of firewood.

OLD BUSINESS:
John Streeter said shingle prices have gone up 3 times since the original quote.
Don Tilton said we need to find some one to take charge of the roofing project. Club members were asked if anyone would like to take charge of ordering and getting the shingles delivered. Gary Greene will need to be gotten a hold of to get new prices on roofing material.
John Dyer asked if the board has had a chance to look at John’s suggestion for shoot monies. There has not been a board meeting so this request hasn’t been looked at yet.

NEW BUSINESS
Nick Dittameros from the MSU newspaper called and wanted to do a story on muzzleloading during the Spring Shoot. Nick came out and spent the day with the primitive group.
The N-SSA wants to come back and there is a possibility of establishing a long term arrangement for the use of our facilities.
Larry Peterson said the web site registered a lot of hits even though the counter was not working for a period of time. Larry also was thinking of adding an “excuse” section and a recipe section to the web site and would like contributions.

SHOW AND TELL
Bruce Robb brought back his “manly” fowler to show progress to date. Bruce has installed a coin silver thumb piece and has had a ball mould made. Bruce has also been making items out of rawhide. These items included a bullet bag, a shot flask and two knife sheaths one which incorporated the use of copper wire and one which had a rawhide liner.
John Dyer had a rifle that was built by Mike Mitchell. John bought this rifle without a lock after Mike’s passing. Apparently Mike use to remove and hide the locks from his rifles when he went on vacation and that is presumed why this rifle had no lock. John was able to make a large Siler lock fit with slight modification to the trigger plate. The gun is a .45 caliber and has a sheet brass trigger guard.
The shotgun group will host a shoot before next months club meeting starting at 9:00 am. On the Sundays that the shotgun group hosts a shoot before the meeting, there will be no weekly Saturday shoot.
The 50/50 raffle was won by Don Tilton. $19.00 was donated back to the club.
Larry Cumming donated a priming flask to the upcoming rifle auction and asked other club members to donate like items.

CONSTITUTION:
Ballots for bylaw changes will be mailed out in the beginning of July. Will all members please return your ballots as soon as possible after receiving them.

The Next Club Meeting Will Be At the Range June 15 at 1pm

--- John Dyer will be hosting a rifle shoot before the meeting ---

-- Start time is 10:00 am. $5 entry and bring a blanket prize worth $10 --

TREASURY REPORT

JB started off the meeting with the announcement that the N-SSA shoot held earlier in the month brought in a nice profit for the club after expenses. Approximately half this amount was generated by the kitchen. JB expressed the hope that we can continue to host this event in the future.

                                COMMITTEE REPORTS

PRIMITIVE:

Gary Greene was not available for a report. John Dyer brought turkey feathers donated by Terry Hadenak to give to the primitive group.

SHOTGUN:

Mike Beatty said they have been shooting on Thursday nights. Mike also said the shotgun range could be opened on Saturdays instead of Thursdays if there was enough interest. Enough people at the meeting expressed interest in Saturdays so Mike said unless it is raining, the shotgun range will now be open on Saturdays at 1:00 pm instead of Thursday nights. Come on out and give it a try!

RANGE:

Nothing to report.

KITCHEN:

Scott Langworthy extended a thank you to everyone who helped out during the N-SSA shoot including but not limited to: --the kids who emptied out and collected pop cans

--the people who worked the snack tent

--the people who cleaned the outhouses

--and the people who cycled through the kitchen giving the regulars a break

The following is being included in this news letter again---Don’t forget we still have the Spring Shoot, State Shoot and the Fall Shoot.

GROUNDS:

Larry Cummings said they will need help with mowing, trimming and general clean up. Larry also needs help getting numbers back on the hundred yard stringers. Workers are asked to bring cordless drills with square head driver bits and squares.

Bob Greening is going to make up 72 target brackets.

Larry said a method for doing a quick change on the stringers and numbers will have to be developed if the N-SSA ever comes back.

OLD BUSINESS:

Don Tilton thanked every one that helped with the N-SSA shoot. Don stated that initial feed back from the N-SSA was very positive; particularly about the kitchen.

John Streeter got a price of $40/square for shingles. This is a 30 year shingle and the price includes ice guard and felt. John also said he knows a young man with a trailer who would haul away the old shingles. We would have the use of it for two weekends for $375.

Don Tilton stated we need to get moving on the roof.

NEW BUSINESS

John Dyer stated he has been trying to win the military/civilian shoot at Chief Okemos Sportsmen Club for 28 years and finally did it on the winning team of John Dyer, Ron Harper, Larry Boettcher and Brett Boettcher. Brett also won the Pa Keeler match beating out his father in the process. Apparently Brett was red hot and won just about every thing including the door prize.

Scott Langworthy announced that last weekend Seth Hootman donated a custom rifle and pistol set to the club for a raffle. Scott said at some point we need to come up with a plan for a raffle to get the most benefit from this especially generous donation.

Jim Snyder thought it would be a good idea to have pictures to show people when we are trying to sell raffle tickets.

John Dyer said he would make and donate an elk skin shooting pouch.

Bruce Bruegge said he will have a horn made and donate it to the club.

Scott Langworthy again said lets approach this in a well thought out manner.

Seth will be back by the Spring shoot to give us more detail on the rifle and pistol and his thoughts on the raffle.

Stu Besonen got a bunch of cardboard donated for target backers. Larry Cummins has been cutting them to a 24” x 24” size.

Next weekend the club grounds need clean up and firewood needs to be cut-bring chain saws.

Help is needed for the Spring shoot – even a few hours one day will help immensely.

John Dyer said there use to be various contests during the Spring shoot i.e. frying pan toss, log sawing and the like. John said if some one can supply the logs and buck he would supply the two man cross cut saw for a log cutting contest. Brett Boettcher said he will bring the logs and buck.

Larry Peterson said he is still looking for historical articles about the club for the web site. Larry also said he received a letter from an Argentina company that sells muzzleloaders and cannons that asked if a link from our web site to their company can be made. It was.

Larry also had an unidentified tool he had bought at a garage sale and asked if anyone knew what it was. The item in question was identified as a pair of fence pliers.

50/50 raffle was won by Bruce Bruegge who donated $27.50 back to the club.

A special thank you to John and Dee Clark for the donation of sixty chairs to the Club house!!

Motion to adjourn made by John Streeter, 2nd by Larry Cummins.

TREASURY REPORT

                                                        COMMITTEE REPORTS

PRIMITIVE:

Gary Greene commented that as of the last Trade Gun Round Robin at Attica’s range LMLGC members are shooting about the middle of the pack. Laingsburg club members are becoming known by name by the participating clubs and a lot of contacts are being made. Also, participating in this Round Robin has given us a jump this years shooting.

SHOTGUN:

Hoping to get Thursday night shooting going again as soon as the mother nature cooperates.

With the Spring shoot fast approaching there is a lot of work that needs to be done to the grounds and range. A few hours by many members will make a big difference. Also members are needed to help out during the Spring shoot weekend-----in the kitchen, at the line, kids events, etc. Again your participation for a few hours makes light work for all.

KITCHEN:

A list of items was suggested to be asked for as a donation to the kitchen. Remember a reduction in kitchen expenses lowers the costs in providing meals and increases the profits generated for the club. Please supply the items as requested i.e. 12 oz cans of pop fit compactly into the pop refrigerator, "Dixie" plates are not as flimsy as paper or Styrofoam.

GROUNDS:

Bob Greening said they took down the 25 yard stringers and posts. Eventually Bob said he like to come up with a quick change system. Reinstallation is planned for May 12. Gary Greene said Wednesday nights have become a work night and people can show up between 3 and 4 in the afternoon to lend a hand.

The gate combination will change April 26. The new combination will be xxxxx.

OLD BUSINESS:

Don Tilton had a day off from work and went to the County to straighten out the assessment for the club campground. The County said they would forward the corrected information to the State.

NEW BUSINESS

The N-SSA lease has been signed and returned.

Eric Lau asked that information about and any help available for the "Michigan Youth Hunter Education Challenge" (MYHEC) be put in the newsletter. MYHEC needs help with the muzzle loading event. Volunteers would oversee safe loading, handling and use of the guns. The event is scheduled for August 23-24 at Capitol City Sportsmen Club. The Club is located north off Saginaw highway on Canal Road. If you can help, please contact Debbie Pinkle at statemyhec07@aol.com . Eric said this is very rewarding and a chance to get more kids into shooting muzzle loaders.

Bob Greening donated 200 .50 cal round balls for the kids shoot. Bob also donated a wood shooting box for the merchandise shoot.

Jimmy Lyons donated powder for the kids shoot as well as several knives for the merchandise shoot.

Ross McAvoy donated a shooting box for the merchandise shoot.

Fred Clark and Larry Peterson have been doing a fantastic job on the Club’s website. Some future additions to the site Larry and Fred would like to add are: -An updated history of the Club. Any old pictures or old articles would be appreciated. I am sure these would be returned after copying. -A tips and hints section -For pictures submitted in the future use a digital or modern camera; no disposables. -Would like to include a copy of our range rules.

Check out the site at: www.lansingmuzzleloadinggunclub.com

Gary Greene wanted to know if the cost of disposal for the old roof was known. JB said a price wasn’t received yet and will ask Jim to follow up on. Gary will pick a date for the reroof to start and a concentrated effort will be required to replace the old roof as quickly as possible.

Mike Beatty said a combination squirrel, partridge, woodcock and fishing trip is being planned for the last weekend of September. The location is east of Grayling for all folks interested.

Eric Lau reminded everyone of the inter-club shoot at Brokenlock May 10. The traveling trophy is awarded to whatever club has the highest scoring four shooters.

Larry Cummings wanted to remind everyone of the flammability of linseed oil and to be careful where you dispose of rags.

SHOW AND TELL

Eric Lau brought a left handed southern mountain rifle he has been working on. The rifle is based on an Eastern Tennessee or Western North Carolina rifle. It is a .50 caliber with a Siler lock.

Eric’s second project is an over the log gun. The barrel is 11/2" across the flats and is .45 caliber. The barrel itself weighs 211/2# and has an elongated dovetail site to allow adjustment for individual eye relief. This gun has a Siler lock also. Eric also mentioned that he shot at the Alvin York Shoot and attendance seemed to up in numbers.

Ron Harper brought a replica 1847 Colt Walker revolver made by Uberti. The pistol is .45 caliber and is loaded with 60 grains of powder. The gun weighs 41/2# and has a 9" barrel. Ron mentioned four of these pistols were typically carried on horseback. The gun was sighted in at 75 to 100 yards and was the most powerful handgun until the 1950’s when the .357 magnum came out. The holster was made by club member John Dyer.

Mike Beatty had two books concerning the French and Indian War era. The first book "Empires Collide" is a historical account of the F & I War from 1754 to 1763. The second book is "The War Trail". Mike said this book was a novel with a lot of information on herbal medicine and nature. Both books were highly recommended.

50/50 raffle was won by Mike Beatty who donated the money back to the club.

A special thank you to Daisy Greening for bringing cookies and to Gary Greene for "Taco’s in a bag".

John Dyer concerned about the lack of interest in monthly shoots thought if cash prizes were awarded it might bring more shooters out. John made a motion for $600 to fund the monthly shoots.               COMMITTEE REPORTS

PRIMITIVE:
Gary Greene said that the first club sponsored Smoothbore Round Robin had 8 first time attendees, as well as 15 of our own club members. Everyone was glad to have use of the clubhouse and everyone had a good time!!

SHOTGUN:
Mike Valley gave the 2008 budget to Don Tilton to present to the Board. Mike and his crew are working on setting up Friday night shoots on a trial basis; more info to come in the future.

RANGE:
Nothing to report.

KITCHEN:
Nothing to report.

GROUNDS:
Larry Cummings talked about having to replace the blades on the mower. The cost will be about $500.00 because it takes two sets or kits. Talk then moved to whether we should repair or replace the mower. Larry said there was nothing wrong with the mower except the blades.

CONSTITUTION:
The board has approved most of the proposed changes to the Club Constitution and a vote on these changes will be forth coming. As in the past, the proposed changes will be mailed to all current members to vote on. Please be sure to vote and to return all ballots!!!!!!!

OLD BUSINESS:

The Club web site has been updated. Thanks guys. Fred and Larry have done a great job---check it out if you get a chance.

NEW BUSINESS
Mike Valley talked about the cracks or separations in the ceiling. Mike thought they might be caused from the floor not being poured thick enough. After some talk it is believed it has come from the room being heated and cooled then heated through out the winter since the kitchen does not show the same problem.
JB said that we received the new tax assessment and yes surprise they went up.
The city of Charlotte would like us to set up a demonstration at their Frontier Days event, anyone interested drop John Dyer a line to get more information.
Mike Valley is getting more information about a group at his church who would like to come out to the club and watch and participate in a demonstration.
Seth Hootman talked about MSU’s shooting team and the range they are building. Seth is going to keep in touch with them and keep us updated to see if we can somehow get together.
JB received a letter from the county about our yearly campground inspection; they now think we have 40 modern campsites—not 50 primitive sites.

SHOW AND TELL
Bruce Robb brought in a jig and showed how to make chain for a pick and whisk. Bruce told us he has a real problem, he’s hooked on the internet and new tools. He always comes up with something of interest each month, keep ‘em coming Bruce!
Seth brought in a couple of Russian knives, one was the last one made by the factory and the other was a Damascus type but was engraved. Both were real nice. Seth also brought in a saber, the same type used by the Russian Cossacks.
Seth also donated a stove and knife for the fall merchandise shoot. Thanks Seth!!
50/50 raffle was won by Larry Cummings who donated the $24.00 back to the club.

OTHER STUFF
Eric Lau sent an email wanting club members to know that on May 10, Brokenlock will be hosting an interclub shoot. It costs nothing to shoot and a shooter can shoot for every club he/she belongs to. The top four shooters from the same club have their scores added together and the club with the highest score wins. Eric made a plaque a few years ago and the club who wins has their named added to it, gets to hang the plaque in their clubhouse for the next year and hosts the following years shoot. Brokenlock will have a bite to eat and the match will be a woodswalk. It’s a good way to get together with other clubs and get to know each other and have fun at the same time. Eric wants to encourage all the members to come out and shoot.

Bob Mills wanted to let club members know that he has two muzzleloaders for sale. Both are Thompson/Center guns.
1) .45 cal. 29” barrel, brass trimmed percussion Hawken for a right hand shooter. Price is $150.00

2) .54 cal. 26” barrel, no brass, sling eyelets, percussion also for a right handed shooter. Price is $150.00
Bob’s phone number is 517-393-2390
